Christian Holder

Christian Holder (18 June 1949 – 18 February 2025) was a British‑Trinidadian artist, painter, dancer, and designer. He created vibrant botanical studies and expressive canvases. His artistic legacy spans painting, design, performance, and costume work.

Holder was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, to celebrated dancers Boscoe Holder and Sheila Clarke Holder. His family moved to London in his infancy, where he grew up immersed in art and performance.

Early in life, he trained as a dancer and later became one of the most iconic performers with the Joffrey Ballet in New York. While dance defined his public career, his visual art became central later in life.

After his father’s death, Holder began to focus deeply on painting. He embraced bold botanical subjects, using colour and movement to reflect his connection to nature and Caribbean heritage. His work captures tropical flowers, lush foliage, and vibrant landscapes with emotional depth.

Holder was also a longtime costume designer and friend of Tina Turner, creating stage wardrobes that enhanced her dynamic performances. He worked with other major performers, blending movement and visual style across disciplines.

In 2016, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London honoured his extraordinary career with Christian Holder: A Life in Performance, New York and London. This event celebrated both his performance and artistic achievements.

Christian Holder’s paintings continue to be exhibited and collected internationally. His botanical studies and expressive canvases remain a testament to his lifelong love of colour, music, and the natural world.
