Classic Picture Frames: A Guide to Traditional Frame Design

An oil painting in a slim black box frame usually looks wrong. Not because the frame is badly made, but because the visual weight is mismatched, a work with depth, varnish and brushwork needs a frame that can carry it.

Classic framing solves that. Swept profiles, carved ornament and gold leaf give a painting the presence it was made for, and the tradition behind these forms runs back through four centuries of European picture framing.

Campbell's of London makes 56 classic profiles by hand from our South Kensington studio, 49 of them gilded in real gold leaf.

What Makes a Frame Classic

Three characteristics define the tradition.

Depth and projection: Classic frames are deep. Tatsiana runs to 78mm and Cromwell to 75mm, which creates real shadow and gives the artwork a sense of being set into the wall rather than laid against it.

Carved and moulded ornament: Acanthus leaf, ripple detail, swept corners, dentil courses. The ornament is not decoration for its own sake — it directs the eye inward toward the work.

Gold leaf: Real water gilding over gesso and clay bole, hand burnished. It reflects light differently from any metallic paint, and it warms as it ages rather than dulling.

Six Classic Profiles

  • Rembrandt is the widest in the collection at 124mm, with a 55mm depth and a 34mm rebate. A reverse-sloped profile that angles back toward the artwork, drawing the eye inward. The rebate depth takes a stretched canvas comfortably.
  • Tatsiana Gilded is 117mm wide with a 78mm depth — the deepest frame we make in this range. That projection creates substantial shadow around the work, which suits darker oils and portraits where the painting needs to be lifted away from the wall.
  • Cromwell is a swept profile at 100mm wide and 75mm deep. Swept frames curve outward from the sight edge in a continuous line, a form associated with English seventeenth and eighteenth century framing.
  • Byron Large is a 98mm dome profile, 57mm deep. The dome shape gives a rounded, softer face than a swept or reverse-slope frame — well suited to landscapes and works with a lighter palette.
  • Madelaine Special is 92mm wide and 45mm deep, swept, with a 15mm rebate. A more restrained swept profile than Cromwell, suited to medium-sized works that need presence without dominating a wall.
  • Victoria Ripple is an 80mm reverse-slope profile with ripple moulding — a repeating wave cut into the face. Ripple frames originate in seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish framing, and they suit works on paper and smaller oils particularly well.

Narrower Classic Profiles

Not every traditional work needs a wide frame. Three narrower options:

  • Alhambra: 42mm reverse slope, 27mm deep, gilded. The narrowest classic profile, suited to small works and dense hangs
  • Maraval: 64mm forward-sloped, available gilded or crackled gilded
  • Noteage: 70mm scoop with a 50mm rebate — unusually deep for its width, useful for canvases on thicker stretchers

Gold Leaf Gilding

Forty-nine of the fifty-six classic profiles are gilded, and the process has not changed in centuries.

Multiple layers of gesso are applied and sanded between coats until the surface is entirely smooth.

Clay bole follows, providing the colour beneath the leaf and the surface that allows burnishing. The gold leaf is then laid by hand and burnished with an agate stone until it takes on depth.

The result cannot be replicated with metallic paint or transfer foil. It also means the frame can be re-gilded decades later rather than replaced — see our frame restoration service.

Choosing a Classic Profile

  • How large is the artwork?
  • Classic frames need room. Under 40cm, a 42–70mm profile such as Alhambra or Noteage. Between 40cm and 1m, 80–100mm. Above that, Rembrandt at 124mm or Tatsiana at 117mm.

  • Is it a stretched canvas?
  • You need a rebate of 30mm or more. Bassora Rondo Gilded at 35mm, Rembrandt at 34mm and Noteage at 50mm are the practical options.

  • How much shadow do you want?
  • Depth controls this. Tatsiana at 78mm and Cromwell at 75mm project furthest from the wall; Alhambra at 27mm sits closest.

  • What is the room like?
  • Period interiors carry the wide swept profiles comfortably. In contemporary spaces, a narrower gilded profile often reads better than a wide one.

What Classic Frames Suit

  • Oil paintings: depth and gold leaf match the physical weight of the medium
  • Portraits: swept and dome profiles frame a face without competing with it
  • Old master works and reproductions: a period-appropriate frame completes the piece
  • Landscape painting: dome and contoured profiles suit softer palettes
  • Works on paper in period interiors: ripple profiles such as Victoria Ripple
  • Mirrors: many classic profiles are also made for our bespoke mirror work

Made to Measure in South Kensington

Every classic profile is made to order at whatever size the artwork requires. Where a piece needs protection we specify UV-filtering glazing and archival mounts alongside the frame.

The full range is at our studio, 35 Thurloe Street, directly opposite South Kensington Underground station. Bring the artwork in and we will hold the profiles against it, or request a quotation online.
