South London Nighthawks Print
Shaquille-Aaron Keith’s latest painting was inspired by the iconic Edward Hopper’s 1942 painting Nighthawks in which the viewer can see people in a downtown diner in New York.
Keith’s reimagined version of Nighthawks riffs on the dramatic angle and lighting of the original, using Morley’s chicken shop in his hometown Bellingham in South London as inspiration. This South London Nighthawks Print transforms an everyday urban landmark into a powerful symbol of community, memory, and belonging.
This scene rewards your attention with every detail; from the loose braid dropped on the pavement, the memorial on the street to a son lost too soon, the familiar glow of the chicken shop lighting, and the urban fox eating a discarded takeaway. It’s a love letter to the place that raised the artist, highlighting the quiet beauty this scene, whilst not shying away from darker side of urban London.
