Description

Boscoe Holder (1921–2007) was most interested in women’s fashion before the 1930s.”Give me beads, lace, feathers!”, he once stated.  It is said that each Saturday morning, Holder would board the 31 bus on a pilgrimage to Portobello Road Market and there he would purchase various garments to either be worn by his wife, or altered so as to be worn by models for his paintings. Many of his works featured vintage coats, dresses, etc. from Portobello Road. As far as his method, paint was applied swiftly with little to no revisions, communicating a sense of spontaneity or urgency in his work.

Portrait in Blue and White was featured in the Victoria Miro Gallery showcase in London 2024.
